Technician + General License Classes

Our friends at the Portland Bureau of Emergency Management are holding 2 classes: one for technician and one for general.

Both classes will be held on November 18th from 6 PM to 9 PM and November 19th from 8 AM to 2 PM @ Portland Community College’s Cascade campus. After the class, there will be an exam session.

Upcoming General Class

We just received this info for a Zoom general class session coming up. Feel free to pass the information along.

A free, weekly, live, Amateur Radio General Class Licensing course on Zoom will begin on Thursday, Oct 27, and will run through Thursday, January 5.  There will be 9 sessions, with two breaks for holidays.  The three-hour sessions will start at 6:30 PM Eastern Time.  Sessions will be recorded. We have been holding these classes for years sponsored by the National Electronics Museum.  Please publicize this with anyone that you think would be interested.  Those wishing to sign up should email

Upcoming Technician Class & Exam – Newberg ARGO

Our friends from the Amateur Radio Group of Oregon sent us this info:

The Amateur Radio Group of Oregon has a technician license class coming up in November in Newberg.  The in-person class will be on Nov 12th – 13th 2022 from 9 AM – 4:30 PM on both days. 

Registration is required and the cutoff to register is October 15th.  There is a $99 fee for the class. 

The test session is typically the Saturday after the class but is subject to change.

Operators Needed – Lewis and Clark OTA Event

OTVARC is in need of lots of operators to help with the upcoming Lewis and Clark event.

The Lewis and Clark Trail on the Air special event is an on air activity that commemorates the historic Lewis and Clark Trail. The trail covers 4900 miles through 16 states. This includes the disembarkation from Camp Dubois and what is referred to as the Eastern Legacy. The event is sponsored by the Clark County Amateur Radio Club with support and participation from clubs in all 16 states along the historic trail.

Date: June 4th, 2022 to June 19th, 2022 UTC (June 3rd, 5pm Pacific – June 19th, 5pm Pacific)

Time Start: 0000 UTC

Time Ends: 2400 UTC

Operating Hours: 24 hrs/day for duration of the event

Simple Rules: Contact one club in each of the 16 states on the historic Lewis and Clark Trail. Operating modes include SSB Phone, FM Phone (for 2 meters only), CW, and FT8. Any combination of modes towards working all 16 states is allowed. A schedule for planned operations for each state will be posted on this website[].

Certificate: Certificates can be requested for two classes of participation:

  • Expedition Partner Certificate: Any station working all 16 states is eligible for the Expedition Partner Certificate.
  • Trail Companion Certificate: Any station working 1-15 states is eligible for a Trail Companion Certificate.

OTVARC is the only designated club for the state of Oregon. We need lots of operators to make this event a success.

THE ELECTION FOR OFFICERS AND THREE TRUSTEES will be underway next week via email. It’s not too late to become a candidate for President; Vice President; Secretary; Treasurer; or, Trustee.  You may self-nominate or nominate another member (with their permission).

Volunteers Make SEA-PAC Possible

SEA-PAC is organized and hosted by volunteers, and would not be possible otherwise. 

As we prepare for SEA-PAC this year we again put out the call for volunteers new and old.
