Vertical antennas are very common antennas for home and portable use.

Type of radiation: Omni-Directional

Suggestions: Use the radial version; non-radial designs do not work as well (Except vertical dipoles). Also, try to avoid traps if possible. You should use a 1:1 current balun at the feedpoint to keep RF off your coax.

PROS
Can be multi-band
Needs minimal room, can be setup in a small yard

CONS
Recommended to guy antennas
Most need radials
Susceptible to local noise

Common Models
DXCommander, Hustler 4BT/5BT/6BTV, Comet R5/7/9, Butternut HF5V

Common Variations
Vertical Dipole
These are just a dipole that has been oriented vertically. They are fed from the center. This means they do not need radials. Models like the Gap Titan Vertical

Telescopic Whip/Hamstick
These antennas are very common for mobile and portable operations. They are short verticals that resonate on a single band. These often have the same threads as CB and trucker antennas.
Models like MFJ 2640T.

Fan Vertical
A fan vertical is very similar to a vertical. It is common to use PVC as the center support and then hang the elements from vertical arms.
