Upgrade to General Class! Your path to worldwide communication

The Oregon Tualatin Amateur Radio Club (OTVARC)  is pleased to announce a new General Class license course! If you have a Technician Class license and are ready to access expanded frequency privileges, this is the course for you.

Earning your General Class license opens up the world of High Frequency (HF) bands, allowing you to make contacts across the country and around the globe. This course will prepare you to pass the 35-question General Class exam (Element 3), unlocking new and exciting aspects of amateur radio.

What you will learn:

  • Advanced regulations and operating procedures
  • Expanded radio wave propagation concepts
  • Intermediate electronic fundamentals and circuitry
  • Advanced antenna theory and practice
  • Radio equipment and digital operating modes
  • Electrical and RF safety

Course details:

  • Dates: September 12-14, 2025
  • Time: Friday 6-9pm; Saturday 9am-4pm; Sunday 12-4pm
  • Location: Cedar Hills Baptist Church, 2470 SW Roxbury Avenue, Portland, OR 97225
  • Prerequisites: You must hold a valid Technician Class license to upgrade to General Class.
  • Required materials: Students should purchase The 2023-2027 General Class FCC Element 3 Amateur Radio License Preparation by Gordon West. The manual is available from Ham Radio Outlet, the ARRL bookstore, and Amazon.

Course cost:

  • The course is offered free of charge by the OTVARC.
  • The FCC application fee and any associated exam fees are the responsibility of the student.
