Operators Needed – Lewis and Clark OTA Event

OTVARC is in need of lots of operators to help with the upcoming Lewis and Clark event.

The Lewis and Clark Trail on the Air special event is an on air activity that commemorates the historic Lewis and Clark Trail. The trail covers 4900 miles through 16 states. This includes the disembarkation from Camp Dubois and what is referred to as the Eastern Legacy. The event is sponsored by the Clark County Amateur Radio Club with support and participation from clubs in all 16 states along the historic trail.

Date: June 4th, 2022 to June 19th, 2022 UTC (June 3rd, 5pm Pacific – June 19th, 5pm Pacific)

Time Start: 0000 UTC

Time Ends: 2400 UTC

Operating Hours: 24 hrs/day for duration of the event

Simple Rules: Contact one club in each of the 16 states on the historic Lewis and Clark Trail. Operating modes include SSB Phone, FM Phone (for 2 meters only), CW, and FT8. Any combination of modes towards working all 16 states is allowed. A schedule for planned operations for each state will be posted on this website[https://lctota.org/].

Certificate: Certificates can be requested for two classes of participation:

  • Expedition Partner Certificate: Any station working all 16 states is eligible for the Expedition Partner Certificate.
  • Trail Companion Certificate: Any station working 1-15 states is eligible for a Trail Companion Certificate.

OTVARC is the only designated club for the state of Oregon. We need lots of operators to make this event a success.

Things you need:
An HF Radio or VHF Radio station
A willingness to have fun!

THE ELECTION FOR OFFICERS AND THREE TRUSTEES will be underway next week via email. It’s not too late to become a candidate for President; Vice President; Secretary; Treasurer; or, Trustee.  You may self-nominate or nominate another member (with their permission).

OTVARC April Meeting

The program for our April Meeting of OTVARC (April 21) will focus on Portable Operations.
We have three presenters for the evening:

  • Russ Mickiewicz (N7QR) will present an overview of HF Portable Operations, emphasizing the technical challenges of off-the-grid power and portable antennas.
  • Dave Wright (AB7DW) is the club’s coordinator of the Annual Crater Lake Special Event Station each July. He will share specifics about experiencing portable operations with experienced colleagues on the weekend of July 16 this year.
  • Ron O’Connor (KD7VIK) coordinates the ARRL Field Day for OTVARC each year and will give us some of the details about operating portable at this year’s event on June 25.

A question and answer time will follow the formal presentations.

The meeting starts at 7 PM with an Elmer/’get help’ table starting at 6:30 PM. This will be held at the Sunset Presbyterian church. The address is 14986 NW Cornell Rd, Portland, OR 97229 . Hope to see you there!

Zoom General Class

Our next General Class virtual training sessions are open for registration. The coordinator for the series and assist subsequent exam sessions is Pete Mackie KG7IXU. There is no charge for the classes. A study book must be purchased (about $25) and the FCC License exam fee is $15.00 with exam venue location assistance offered at the end of your last General License Session. Please be aware that after April 19th, 2022, all new licenses or renewals will cost $35.

Sessions Schedule
General Class License Sessions: there will be eight two-hour Zoom virtual meeting app sessions on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings respectively. The two per week sessions will run from the week of Wednesday, May 4th, through the week of Saturday, May 28th, 2022.

Times for the class is Wednesdays from 7 PM – 9 PM and Saturdays from 9:30 AM – 11:30 AM. It is recommended to attend all sessions of the class.

Virtual Classroom
These General Class license sessions, as in the past, is now not in a physical classroom due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead, you will use the free Zoom virtual meeting app on your desktop or laptop computer, or mobile device, in the comfort and safety of your residence. The free Zoom app is available for all of the popular personal computer operating systems plus mobile devices. Download and install the free Zoom Clint for Meetings app from https://zoom.us/support/download

For Sale Page Announcement

Looking for some test equipment or amateur radio equipment? Take a look at the equipment for sale from OTVARC. These pieces have come from SK estates or donations from other amateurs. Proceeds of these sales go to the families of SKs and to OTVARC.
